The 4th Annual Oakland Music Festival Announces Dates and New Weeklong Format

Festival to Takeover Downtown Oakland in Support of Oakland Creatives

OAKLAND, Calif., August 31, 2016 -- Oakland Music Festival (OMF) announced today it is returning for a fourth consecutive year with an expanded weeklong celebration of Oakland’s music and culture. Taking place from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 9, festival organizers have partnered with venues across downtown Oakland to curate an eclectic event series dedicated to highlighting Oakland’s diverse culture, while providing a platform to discuss the local creative community.

Since launching in 2013, the annual event has focused on highlighting a mix of local musicians and emerging national talents, collectively featuring more than 200 multi-genre artists over the previous three years’ events. Some notable performances have included Anderson .Paak, Dom Kennedy, SZA, and Oakland’s own, The Coup, in addition to rising Bay Area artists Marc E. Bassy, Los Rakas, Noodles, and more. What started as a 700 person block party in 2013 grew into a full-fledged festival taking over three city blocks and welcoming almost 3,500 attendees in 2015. Organizers estimate that 40 percent of the previous year’s attendees came from outside of Alameda County, with close to five percent from out-of-state, from places like New York, Washington D.C., and Oregon. The festival has especially resonated with the millennial crowd, with 73 percent of festival goers ranging from ages 18 to 34.

“When we launched in 2013, we were really inspired by the impact of events such as Austin, Texas’ South By Southwest conference, Miami’s Winter Music Conference, and even our own Art Murmur, in terms of bringing a national audience and a direct economic benefit to their respective host cities,” said OMF Co-founder Alfonso Dominguez. “After last year, we really looked at our own growth strategy and overall goals to see how we could continue to grow organically, while making the greatest impact for ourselves, the city of Oakland, and the artists and creatives that call this city home the most. This new expanded format is the result of that discussion.”

This year, OMF will embark upon a new weeklong program geared to give festival goers an engaging agenda of authentic Oakland experiences that reflect the city’s various scenes and creative communities. With this expanded offering, organizers aim to fully encompass Oakland’s resurgence as a premier music and arts destination, while providing a more robust platform for those in the community who are helping to shape the scene. Through showcases, parties, community events, workshops, and panel discussions, the festival aims to shine a spotlight on past and future movements, relevant conversations, and local artistry.

Oakland Music Festival kicks off this year with its launch event on September 30, 2016, in collaboration with Oaklandish. As the festival lineup and agenda nears announcement, limited discounted $40 early-bird VIP tickets will go on sale starting Wednesday, September 1 at 10:00am PST for guests 21 years of age and older. VIP passes will grant access to the full week of events and will come with a commemorative festival package.
